The history of the city of Borna |
Long before the city foundation, there was a moated castle in the city area since the 9th century. The first documentary mentioning of Borna as a city was back in 1251. during the wars in the middle ages, Borna was badly destroyed each time. Agriculture was mainly dominating the most of the time, especially onion cultivation. The beginning of brown coal mining around 1800, started the industrialisation of the city. Coal industry dominated the area until the recent days. On 14th of January 1867, Borna was connected to the German railway network (Saxon-Bavarian railway to Leipzig), on 8th of April, the network was lengthen over Geithein to Chemnitz. |
